Equal or Not???? and A November Calendar Header!

Common Core standards requires students to identify whether an equation is equal or not. I originally jumped right into this with CRAZY equations (4+1=4+1  equal or not??)...needless to say we backed that train up REALLY fast! So baby steps - below you will find several worksheets to attack this standard with.

Being that I LOVE Thinking Maps almost as much as I love my husband-I have a tree map for sorting the equations.
On this page, students will cut the equations out. They will work in partners to solve by drawing circle drawings. This will help them determine of the equation is equal or not equal. (4=4 Circle drawing would look like this: oooo|oooo...four and four are equal because four circles is the same as four circles.) After they have decided if the equation is equal or not, they glue the equation to the tree map.
Again students cut the equations out then solve with circle drawings. Sort onto the tree map. (5+1=6  Circle drawing would look like this: ooooo|o=oooooo...there are the same number of circles on each side of the equal sign so this equation is equal. They would glue this equation to the equal side of the tree map.
The two pages below I am going to use for homework. Again, I want students to draw circle drawings to solve and circle the correct vocabulary word to match. Being that the standard specifically uses the words true and false, I included these words on these pages.

Finally, I had a request for a November calendar header so here is one I just created for you my friends-hope you like:-) Happy Friday!

  1. we use thinking maps too!! And we were just told that in the next few years we are going to be migrating to Common Core standards - which is aggravating bc FLDOE has just revamped our standards as it is, and then we're going to have to relearn them all again...but it'll be a good move- I'm excited about it.

  2. They are definitely very different than what we had previously! They go a lot more in depth which is a goo thing-but change is always uncomfortable! I hope you can use some of my thinking maps in your classroom-I would die without them!

  4. I love this idea. This is a great (and easy) way to get students thinking about basic math skills and number sense and equations. Thanks for sharing! I'll have to try using this soon.

  8. That's cute that you love tree maps almost as much as you love your husband. You crack me up! It's taking me a while to come around to the Thinking Maps, but posts like yours show some great ways to use them. Thanks so much for these terrific freebies.
